Hehe. After much hesitation, I decided to start recapping the drama Whirlwind Girl that stars Hu Bingqing, Yang Yang, Chen Xiang, Wu Lei and Vincent Jiao. Yes, the casting is the main reason I am watching the show, but it is turning out more interesting than expected. Here is a fast recap for everyone to catch up for this week!
Hu Bingqing as Wei BaiCao (BC)
Yang Yang as Ruo Bai (RB)
Wu Lei as Hu Yi Feng (YF)
Chen Xiang as Feng Ting Hao (FTH)
Bai Jing Ting as Yu Chu Yuan (YCY)
Zhao Yuan Nuan as Feng Ting Yi (FTY)
Vincent Jiao as Qu Xiao Nan (QXN)
Episode one starts with all kind of flashback hard to explain. There are two competing in taekwondo with one girl (our main character Bai Cao) being nearly killed because her opponent is jealous of her. Then we see RB goes to her rescue with FTH and YCY following closely behind. We also have scenes of a guy (prob YCY) quitting Taekwondo and another guy very disappointed. There is also a picture on the wall foreshadowing some friendships/love relationships.
We see Chen Xiang’s character, FTH, winning the competition and everyone at home watching and admiring him. They are proud he made China victorious this year (finally after such a long time).
However, the sweet moment turns salty when a random Korean little girl (who turns out to be the competition’s organizer’s daughter) goes up and tries to say FTH won through cheating (by eating drugs and stuff). She asks people to recheck his body because, as she reminds people, Chinese people tend to cheat. She reminds them about the same thing that happened 10 years ago when past champin Qu Xian Nang cheated to gain the title. FTH is mad and leaves the competition saying if that’s how it works at this competition, then he’d rather not accept the first place. After testing him, he was announced clean and received his throphy.
In the meantime, QXN’s daughter is having a hard time. People are blaming her for being the daughter of the shameful QXN. They blame her and her father for causing dishonor to China and all their athletes. The poor girl says she is sorry even if BC comes to save her. Without doing it on purpose, BC accidentally let one of the bully fall hard on the ground.
BaiCao is the only disciple of her teacher QXN. She goes back home and cooks for him. Her daughter (who left his father’s side because she feels he is the one responsible for causing the death of her mother) confronts BC for still staying with a cheater and a liar, saying staying with him will give her no future in the taekwondo world. BC says of course she wants to become a pro tae master, but her master is just more important. There are random flashback showing that the teacher, 10 years ago, used drugs to win the competition. This whole situation causes the death of his wife, the dishonor to ther family/dojo and QXN’s bad body state.
At a local festival that allows multiple dojos to show their talents, RB and his dojo shows off big time (including a moment when he is saving a little girl from a big … balloon).
BaiCao followed her Teacher’s colleague (the new owner of the dojo after QXN’s fail 10 years ago) to the festival. There she learns that he is using cutted wood pieces and confronts him outside. He tells her to shut up but does not realize someone is filming. The video is shown to the press at the festival and the teacher’s colleague is yelling to BC to say this video is fake, but she does not want to lie. The dojo yet again gets bad reputation and the teacher’s colleague tries to force BC to leave the school. She refuses, but her teacher also joins in. She is forced to leave under the rain. The daughter of the teacher helps her by bringing her things out for her.
After MUCH hesitation, she goes to live at her best friend’s house. After being welcomed by the homey family and being introduced to her new beautiful room, she and her best friend goes to a peeking session at the guys’ shower place. BC does not want to go, but oh well 8D the two of them get caught of course.
Then, we have RB confronting BC, but she runs away. End of a very packed first episode.
